Let’s connect and reduce our footprint together. Your ticket includes delicious vegetarian appetizers and a drink ticket\, additional beverages will be available for purchase. \nJoin us at the Bell in Scona for an evening packed with passionate experts and hands on activities\, all in the name of waste reduction! While the event begins at 6PM\, doors will open at 5:45\, giving you a little bit of extra time to settle in if needed. \nPart 1\nThis event functions in two parts – the first part\, we hear from an expert panel of speakers. We will learn about an area of waste. This year\, the focus is on lawn and garden waste\, presentations begin at 6:15 PM. We will hear from: \n\nWaste Free Edmonton’s Co-founder\, Melissa G\, will start us off with an overview of Waste Free Edmonton and the recently launched Beyond the Lawn campaign\nBent Arrow Traditional Healing Society will speak to our Relationship to the Land\, providing context for the event\nKate and Liz of the Edmonton Native Plant Society will present on the importance of native plants for fostering biodiversity.\nIlan from the Alberta Native Bee Council will cover how to identify native bees and tips on how to support bees\nHabitat YEG’s Melissa P will provide information on sharing your outdoor space by turning it into a wildlife habitat and touch on invasive species\, plants\, and birds.\nDustin from Sustainable Food YEG will discuss organics as a resource and growing your own soil\nDora of Natures Elements will round out our presentations with a talk on using our yards for connection and enrichment\, water harvesting\, and designing your landscape.\n\nPart 2 \nActivities will begin following the presentations\, around 7:30 PM. \nFollowing the speakers\, we will have time to mingle\, build community\, and continue the conversation. Treat yourself to the vegetarian taco bar\, enjoy our free activities\, and make some new friends! This year\, our activities include: \n– Silk Screen a previously loved Tee with the help of an artist from SNAP (See Tips Below)\n– Plant a native seed to take home with the help of Edmonton Native Plant Society\n– Learn about traditional medicine with Bent Arrow and make your own smudge kit\n– Learn more about native bees with Alberta Native Bee Council\n– Haven’t made it to one of our Climate Chats yet? Throughout our evening together\, our Climate Chats facilitator will guide you through various exercises designed to help you explore and name your big feelings\, practice listening\, and tap into your values to plan your next action. \nWorking in community allows us to: \n\nengage with our feelings and climate action in a safe and supported environment\nget some external accountability and ideas to help realign our actions with our environmental values\npractice having difficult conversations\n\nACCESSIBILITY INFO\n\nBus\, train\, bike or drive: there are two LRT stations across the street\, many bus routes 1-2 blocks away\, bike racks\, and paid parking in the area\nThe building is wheelchair accessible with barrier free washrooms\nThe table has legs at both ends and armless plastic chairs\nThere is no ASL interpreter\, and all facilitation and instructions will be given in English (speaking and writing)\nYou will have a workbook to doodle and draw in\, but feel free to bring a fidget tool as needed\nWe won’t be playing any music\, and the private room will protect our space from some of the ambient library noise\nMasks are strongly encouraged\, but not required. DESCRIPTION:Join Waste Free Edmonton on October 27th\, 2024 for our annual Trash and Treat! \nCome in costume and help cleanup Ottewell Park and Playground before heading over to Anvil Coffee House for a well-deserved treat. \nPhase 1: Ottewell Community League 10 AM \nPut your costume on and meet us at the front doors of Ottewell Community Hall at 10am with garbage pickers\, trash bags. Please note there will be limited spare trash pickers to borrow\, so please bring your own if you have them! We also suggest bringing gloves and a water bottle. Come with a friend to double the fun you’ll have! \nPhase 2: Anvil Coffee House at 11:30 AM \nAfter working up an appetite collecting trash\, we will head over to Anvil Coffee House for some tasty treats. Join us for an informal meet up to connect\, reflect\, and keep the great conversation going! Please purchase your ticket using the “Website” link to Eventbrite below. \nWe are stacked with special guests: \n\nSarah of Blenderz Garment Recyclers will speak about the global problem of textile waste\, second hand clothing markets\, and how Blenderz is working to address the problem.\nKatrina from Earth Warrior Lifestyle will present on zero waste living and how Earth Warrior is addressing the problem of textile waste through recycling\nWaste Free Edmonton’s textile specialist Lauren will present on the actions individuals\, companies\, government\, and non-profit organizations (like Waste Free Edmonton!) can take to combat textile waste.\nLast but certainly not least… Do you have something that needs mending? Bring it with you! Rachel McQueen and The University of Alberta’s human ecology repair cafe will be on site with the supplies and knowledge you need to repair so you don’t have to replace. They will provide basic supplies and sewing machines\, but if you need help with something that requires an additional material (like replacing a zipper\, for example)\, please bring your own.\n\nWe cannot wait to see you at this incredible event! Don’t forget to bring along any of your well-loved clothing items that are in need of a repair. This is sure to be a fabulous evening of learning\, sharing\, and mending.
